Clay facials aren’t just for acne-prone skin! Though clays are awesome for drawing out oils and toxins, certain kinds of clay contain minerals and antioxidants that treat aging, inflammation and more. Next time you go to a spa, look for these superstar ingredients.
Bentonite Clay facials
Best for controlling oil and acne
Bentonite is the main ingredient in cult favorites like Aztec Secret Indian Healing Clay. It draws out impurities and declogs pores. Your skin actually feels less oily for days after the mask. Beauty vloggers like Michelle Phan made DIY facials from bentonite in cat litter (yes, you read that correctly). Unfortunately not all cat brands use pure bentonite. You’ll have better luck going to a spa instead of a pet store.
Kaolin Clay facials
Best for dry and sensitive skin
This is the gentlest type of clay. It doesn’t irritate or dry out the skin, and doubles as a detox and exfoliating product. Pink kaolin is the most common variety, but if you have very sensitive skin look for white or yellow kaolin. Many spa treatments combine this ingredient with moisturizing oils or honey.
Fuller’s Earth Clay facials
Best for whitening
Fuller’s Earth clay is made from volcanic ash, which can lighten and brighten the skin. Like most clays, it will pull out impurities, but it also calms redness and blotchiness. Your skin will look noticeably more fair and radiant right after the treatment. If you’re into whitening products, get this facial to complement your skincare routine or get an extra brightening boost before a big event.
French Green Clay facials
Best for anti-aging
This clay is packed with minerals and antioxidants that can strengthen the skin and neutralize the effects of UV and sun exposure. Spa treatments will usually combine this with facial massages to boost circulation. To get the full anti-aging benefits, look for facials that start with a clay deep cleansing and mask, and end with a collagen-boosting serum or ampoule.
Rassoul Clay facials
Best for blackheads
A lot of us don’t really get zits, but our nose and chin get clogged with blackheads and whiteheads. Rassoul clay or Morrocan clay masks draws out impurities and is lightly hydrating. It is gentler than Bentonite clay, and can even calm mild redness and blotchiness. This clay is also good for detoxifying the scalp, so don’t be surprised if you see it in hair masks and treatments.
