Skin rejuvenation vs. resurfacing

Categories : Clinics

What’s the difference between skin rejuvenation and skin resurfacing? You’ll see those terms in beauty articles or the brochures in your favorite Manila dermatologists’ clinics. Sometimes they’re used interchangeably — but they’re actually two different things.

skin rejuvenation
Skim rejuvenation is a broad term for treatments that make your skin look younger and healthier.

Skin Rejuvenation

This is basically any product, facial, or treatment that makes the skin look better. This can mean a powerful serum, or in-office procedures like dermal fillers or injectibles, microneedling, microdermabrasion, and chemical peels.

Many dermatologists in Manila have special laser, ultrasound or radiofrequency equipment that can stimulate collagen or break down scars. You’ll probably see these terms: Ultherapy, Thermage, Fraxel.

skin resurfacing
Skin resurfacing can brighten and even out skin tone.

Skin Resurfacing

Skin resurfacing is one method of skin rejuvenation. It’s a type of treatment or procedure that physically removes the skin’s top layer. This is effective for brightening or evening out skin tone, treating pigmentation and scars, or minimizing the appearance of fine lines.

There are many kinds of skin resurfacing treatments. There are chemical peels that use acids that melt the dead skin cells. There are deeper laser resurfacing for scars and wrinkles. The price, effectiveness, side effects and down time vary. Your dermatologist can recommend one based on your skin concern.

What should I ask when I’m comparing skin rejuvenation treatments?

It can be pretty overwhelming to look at all the available skin rejuvenation treatments in Manila. Here’s what to ask or do when you go see your dermatologists.

What’s your main skin concern?

Do you want to brighten your skin tone, lift sagging skin, or fade acne scars or blemishes? Some treatments have many benefits, but you still want to set your priority. For example, chemical peels can even skin tone and eventually small acne scars, but lasers can target a large, stubborn blemish more effectively.

How “dramatic” do you want the change to be?

Discuss expectations with your dermatologist. Find out how many sessions you need to get the results you want.

What’s your budget and your schedule?

Don’t be shy about saying how much you can afford and whether you have the time to go for several sessions. Bear in mind that some treatments have “down time” (ex: a few days of redness or peeling). It’s better to be upfront and then stick to the recommended regimen than quit after one or two sessions.
